I enjoy being a part of different learning networks because it allows me to sharpen my skills, learn new techniques, and makes me a better educator through collaboration with others. During this time, we get to discover what is working, what isn’t working, and find valuable solutions to the strategies that may be dated. We also get to engage in cross curricular activities and learn what we can do (as electives) to assist students in being successful in their core academic classes.
Action Based Learning PLC
This district wide learning community is made up of elementary action based learning teachers. Studies show that movement helps to prepare the body for learning. During these meetings, we explore the 12 foundations of learning (crossing the midline, body in space, balance, visual development, rhythm, tactile learning, motor skills, eye/hand eye/foot coordination, physical fitness, cardiovascular fitness, problem solving, and self management) and how they can enhance the learning process. We also brainstorm ways to close learning gaps by combining movement and content that are problem areas. The movement activities in action based learning labs are specifically designed to develop necessary components to enhance whole brain learning and access parts of the brain that may otherwise be underdeveloped.
Health & PE PLCS
Health & PE (both elementary and secondary) meet regularly to discuss course content with hopes of developing creative and engaging lesson plans that will help students to achieve success and master the content. We collaborate on activities and events to enhance each program for the students. We take a closer look at the TEKS to understand the content better and plan for our units collectively before each person plans individually.
Leaders of Learning
The Organizational Transformation Department of our school district has a learning network called Leaders of Learning/ JEPL(Job Embedded Professional Development) that meets weekly to discuss different methods of helping teachers in the district to be successful during the school year. During these meetings, we discuss student ownership of learning and behavior. This consists of teacher clarity, student, clarity, feedback, goal setting, and student ownership.
